On the eve of the World Cup in Rome in July 1990, at the ancient Baths of Caracalla Stadium, the famous tenors Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras assembled together for the first time to perform in concert.
They sang favorites from opera to Broadway and popular Italian songs. Never before had opera singers performed for such a wide audience, most of whom were soccer fans, not opera fans. The response was so overwhelming, their show swept the world.
The first concert to feature three tenors who are professional opera singers singing a similar repertoire will be held in on the Big Island on April 10 and 11, said Frank Meyer found of the Hoku Concert Series. Tenors Isaac Hurtado, Brian Stucki, and Tyler Nelson joined forces in 2014 and have since performed more than 100 operatic roles, in addition to individual concerts in the U.S. and beyond.
“Although these three tenors, who go by the name of Ultimi 3 Tenors, cover many of the songs in the original concert in 1990, they add their own personalities and several contemporary favorites to the show. They couldn’t pull off this difficult repertoire without being highly trained professional opera singers in their own right,” Meyer said.
On April 10, the concert takes place at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and will benefit Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. The April 11 show is the 14th annual Hoku Concert Series Hospital Soiree with proceeds benefiting the Kona Hospital Foundation.
